Dan Brown's LOST Kryptos Symbol: "W" is D.O.S.

Conspiracy novelist Dan Brown has made cryptic comments about the Kryptos "hidden" sculpture and James Sanborn, the Kryptos creator, has not "hidden" his feelings about them.   In a Wired Magazine article  on the enigmatic Kryptos sculpture at CIA HQ, Sanborn was none too happy about the link being made to Dan's conspiracy novels:

Though Sanborn's usual practice is to stay in the background, every so often he feels obliged to comment.  In 2005, he refuted author Dan Brown's claim that the "WW" in the plaintext of K3 could be inverted to "MM," implying Mary Magdalene  (quite understandable as Dan sees the world upside down in his gravity inversion boots).   Brown included pieces of Kryptos on the book jacket of "The Da Vinci Code" and has hinted that his next novel will draw on the CIA sculpture, a prospect that deeply annoys Sanborn.

Sanborn should be annoyed because Dan may have corrupted the coordinates encoded in the Kryptos ciphertext to fit his latest fiction, "THE LOST SYMBOL."   

ITEM:  On the backcover of the  U.S. version of the  "The Da Vinci Code"  near the Crais quote are the coordinates 37° 57' 6.5" N 77° 8' 44" W on one side. 

These are a clue to the coordinates in the deciphered text of K2 of Kryptos, which are 38° 57' 6.5" N 77° 8' 44" W,  reportedly the approximate GPS coordinates of the Kryptos sculpture at the CIA.  When Dan Brown was asked, he replied, "This discrepancy is intentional." 

Perhaps another "Deception Point," Dan?

Let US analyze the K4 ciphertext and the K2 coordinates:

Given  "T IS YOUR POSITION - E"  from the Kryptos Morse Code strata message, substituting T= DOS,   "DOS IS YOUR POSITION - E." 

As DOS is the abbreviation for the Department of State,  the combined message reads:  Department of State is your position - E,   the answer to the Kryptos question posed in K3, "X" Can you see anything Q?   

In the CIA's "Simple Past,"  you can see "Q,"  the "E-shaped" building at the Potomac Annex of the Department of State on E (Street).   "Q" is located in the back of the DOS Potomac Annex and "hidden"  from street view.

But changing the K2 coordinate - "38"  to "37" - changes the K4 ciphertext to:

Perhaps Dan is "wishing upon a star" - the Bethlehem Star - and the Washington Monument (on September 15) is Direction Of Star.  Wayne Hershel, author/researcher, (http://www.keyofsolomon.net) thinks so.  Wayne predicts the Washington Monument (see image above) plays a critical plot point in the "LOST SYMBOL" that our simple past was in our stars (or was it Mars?). (fyi - there is a Free Mason 33-degree seal at the top of a RED (planet) pyramid shape on the book's cover) 

If Dan thinks we are LOST in space, Wayne thinks Dan's LOST symbol is "W", the Washington Monument,  which points in the direction of the star system on September 15, which coincidentally is the release date of Dan's book.  (N.B. Asserting aliens are our LOST ancestors could be called the "greatest lie in human history" if Dan hadn't already used that line in "The Da Vinci Code" to describe his "vast conspiracy" to hide the truth about the life of Jesus, which, if exposed, would threaten Christianity.)  

But facts are "facts" and, as Dan has demonstrated in his rare interviews, "facts" are in the eye of the beholder.   One of Dan's "facts" is featured prominently at the beginning of "The Da Vinci Code."  On a page headed "Fact," Dan states the Priory of Sion, which is central to the secret at the heart of his story, is a real organization, and at the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris — the French National Library — one can find proof that it was founded in Jerusalem at the time of the Crusades. That proof is in documents known as the Dossiers Secrets or Secret Files. 

Dan wants to be a real writer:  If Dan wanted to fulfill his dreams to be a real writer, he would have done a little more research and discovered the Priory of Sion was founded in the town of Annemasse in eastern France in 1956.  The founders and signatories inscribed with their real names and aliases were Pierre Plantard, also known as "Chyren", and André Bonhomme, also known as "Stanis Bellas."   Sion was based on a popular local feature, a hill south of Annemasse in France, known as Mont Sion.

Dan should let his conscience be his guide: It's important for authors to use the Web responsibly. More than half the information out there is garbage. It's very important to realize that just because it's on the Web doesn't mean that it's a fact.  There are some major books that were published and had to be edited later because of faulty research. - Dan Brown

Dan is not one to let "facts" get in the way of "His-story."  It is a fact that Dan insists the Priory of Sion could be "true."   However, if Dan's "LOST SYMBOL" includes more of his "facts" about Kryptos,  Sanborn may respond with not-so-hidden warning ala John Paul Jones' defiant statement on the Bonhomme Richard, "I have not yet begun to fight."

Perhaps Dan is not a LOST Boy and there is a "hidden" meaning to  "W is D.O.S."    It could be the key to unlock Dan's "simple past" -  Writing is Dan's Original Sin. 

The Kryptos keywords may hold a clue to Dan's conspiracy novels:  PS (Priory of Sion): It's as simple as A-B-C (read: A Big Con).

"WW" knows and now you're not so LOST.

Solving KRYPTOS - Reflecting on the CIA's Simple Past

KRYPTOS is one big mystery.  Even its name is a mystery: Why did James Sanborn name his enigmatic  CIA sculpture with a "K" and not a "C"  as a reference to the C-I-A?   Perhaps it goes back to the beginning and the purpose of the sculpture was to recognize THE Agency's "simple past" (K1- Palimpsest ).  If so, the  "K"  may refer to the CIA's simple past - its KINDERGARTEN -  the "Q" building,  the "E" shaped building on 23rd  + E Street on the DOS (Department of State) property.   If so,  Sanborn should have named it "QRYPTOS" (interestingly too "K" is equally spaced between the "E" and the "Q").

KRYPTOS symbolizes a map of the TRIANGLE  of the National Mall - Lincoln Memorial ("SUBTLE SHADING"), the Washington Monument (OXO) and the "Q" Building on E and 23rd Streets, which is next to the J Kennedy Center.  The Triangle's Right Angle(RA) is on 23rd Street.  Kryptos is a pictorial representation of the triangle - consider the position of the TRIANGLE ROCK is at a RIGHT ANGLE to the RED SLATE.  The Red Slate (coincidentally the color of the Q-E building's roof) honors those who sacrificed their blood in their service to the country and the off-line Kryptos letters - D-Y-A-H-R-O  - are a symbol for "Die a Hero." Symbolizing the Reflecting Pool in the center of the Triangle is the WHIRLPOOL in the center front of  KRYPTOS.   Perhaps Sanborn's MAELSTROM (hint: JJ's "Miles Straum") symbolizes THE Agency's role in confronting turbulent waters. 

But looking closer we see the Reflecting Pool is bordered by CONSTITUTION AVE and INDEPENDENCE AVE.    Perhaps Sanborn was sending US a message that without the Constitution as its foundation and  Independence from politics,  the future of the CIA might has well sink in the Reflecting Pool. As the CIA once stationed "buildings" around the Reflecting Pool between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, George Washington and Honest Abe must have been rolling in their graves as they watched George W. and George T. subvert the Constitution and drown the CIA again in a political cesspool (reflecting on Watergate).  As Sanborn may have indicated, if it wasn't for the Constitution, there would not be a reason for Antipodes.

So when you think about KRYPTOS, think about these "patriots" who have brought dishonor to THE Agency and are a disgrace to the memories of true heroes who were not afraid to serve in the military, such as Wild Bill Donovan and the men and women of the CIA who died defending the Constitution.

Perhaps Sanborn wanted US to remember the words of another George.... Santayana: 

'Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.'

If K4 represents a Right Triangle of the Washington National Mall, as well as a history of the OSS-CIA, then the Antipodes of the National Mall of Heroes is VT MT - the "Vermont Monument" - the CIA's "hidden"  Wall of Honor - which is symbolically at the end of the K4 message. 

To find VT MT,  go up the George Washington Parkway (GWPK). But it's not open to the public - Zero Frequency ZF,  only those allowed inside the CIA can see it.

The CIA's "hidden" Wall of Honor is a field of black stars chiseled into a sheer white face of Vermont marble, flanked on the left by the American flag and on the right by the agency's banner. The stars represent one for each life lost. Above them, in gold block letters, read the inscription: "IN HONOR OF THOSE MEMBERS OF THE CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY."

Also "hidden" from the public is a statue of Wild Bill Donovan, the father of the OSS and considered the first DCI of the CIA,  and a single star on a wall representing the 116 officers who died heroes wile serving in the OSS.

 

Solving KRYPTOS - Part 6 - The New Meets the Old I-Q

W.W.:  "KRYPTOS speaks to a sense of place. You have captured much of what this agency is about." 

If so, then solving CIA's KRYPTOS is SIMPLE; the clues are in The Agency's PAST.

The key word to decipher KRYPTOS K1 is PALIMPSEST, and it is no coincidence that its anagram is SIMPLE PAST.  The key to understanding Kryptos can be found in the past and the solution is the location of the place.   But where to LOOK in the past?

SHADOW FORCES X ABSCISSA - PETRIFIED WOOD

Interesting that both Kryptos and Antipodes had Petrified Wood as a center piece.  The Old "Big W" Tree AKA the HYDRA on the X ABSCISSA - the Southwest corner  - from the Washington Monument could be fairly described as having a petrified wood appearance.   Interesting that the Kryptos 11 foot column of wood had an "EYE" that appeared similar to an EYE in the "HYDRA."  The EYE looks in the Southwest direction. 

The JOHN PAUL JONES Memorial is approximately one hundred yards SW from the "Big W"  Hydra Tree.  There are fish figures spitting water (AMPLE SPIT) at the base of the JPJ statue. The south side of the memorial depicts John Paul raising the US flag for the first time on an American war vessel under distress.  "S.O.S."    As John Paul is considered the "Father of the US Navy," perhaps it is a clue that leads to Navy Hill.  Perhaps Navy Hill is RK's VIRTUALLY INVISIBLE building on E Street.

Looking in the past,  KRYPTOS provides a map to allow a LOST CIA agent to find his way home in history  to  23rd + E Street, the "hidden" location of the OSS-CIA "E" shaped building AKA the "Q" building. 

"Q"  - Described in a government document as one of the most beautiful secret squares in Washington, 2430 E St. NW is the 13-acre, six-building complex that was originally the site of the Old Naval Observatory, built in 1843. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and contains 19th-century administration buildings and a 1904 statue of Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and surgeon general in the Continental Army during the Revolution.During World War II, the property's gracious Central Building, "Q" building, constructed in 1910, served as the home office for William "Wild Bill" Donovan's Office of Strategic Services. It later became the first headquarters of the CIA, formed in 1947.  The buildings, which have been the headquarters for the Navy's Bureau of Medicine and Surgery since the late 1800s, are hidden from the roadway by security gates and located within the shadow of the Kennedy Center, just across the street from the State Department.   Another 25 CIA "buildings" were scattered around the Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial and in front of the Tidal Basin, near the John Paul Jones memorial.

Solving KRYPTOS - Part 5 - The Kryptos Triangle

 

Spies protect themselves against eavesdropping by using codenames, an "ALIAS" such as Ben Franklin's nom de plume (pen name) Bonhomme Richard (NBFN).  To hide special knowledge spies hide terms using abbreviations and add transpositions to further hide the message.  You may be intelligent but you’re LOST if someone uses an abbreviation and you don’t know where it comes from and what it means.   Perhaps Sanborn hid clues in the CIA's simple past in terms of abbreviations in the plaintext of K4:  Let US look for X-amples:

Applying clues provided by Sanborn, one can draw a similar right triangle connecting the Big W (Washington Monument),  the Lincoln Monument and the OSS-CIA's E Street building. Transposed CK (Kennedy Center)  OXO (X Abscissa of the Washington Monument) and RA (Lincoln Memorial).

VRLF - Virtual Life Force of the OSS was Wild Bill Donovan.

AIDULK may refer to Bill's traveling to Europe, where he aided efforts to get food to people in neutral nations after America entered the war.  ULK - "Unaligned Kountries" or KLU is a clue.

Solving KRYPTOS – Part 3 - Look in the Opposite Direction

Antipodes (opposites) was inspired by Kryptos, depicting two opposing encoded texts, one relating to C.I.A. covert operations and the other to K.G.B. operations. 

Sanborn cryptically states, “Its (Antipodes) present location at the Hirshhorn museum on the mall between the U.S. Capitol Building and the Washington Monument seems to be ultimately appropriate."  (read: to find the Kryptos "hidden location"  look in the opposite area of National Mall between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.--S.O.s)

More "Hidden" Clues:

Compass Rose: At the entrance to the CIA courtyard is a granite slab upon which is engraved a compass rose. The needle of the compass points not to magnetic North, but rather to a nearby loadstone, a magnetic rock naturally producing a influential magnetic field.  (points Southwest  approx. 225 degrees)

Kite/Diamond/ Pyramid - Two slabs on either side of the pond have four layers of stone.  Nearby a kite-shaped stone (or diamond shaped) has a pyramid design on one of its corners.  A set of two strata layers in the courtyard form a line that points directly to the copperplate where they sink below the ground.  This coincides with a second set of two strata layers near the sidewalk of the entrance that forms a parallel line to the one in the courtyard.  These parallel lines are virtually invisible.  Sanborn stated that he was disappointed that these two sets were not placed to perfectly coincide as intended.

The design of the District of Columbia can be viewed as a diamond, a mystic Masonic symbol, with the White House, Capitol, Lincoln Memorial, and Jefferson Memorial at the four points.  At the spot where the Washington Monument stands is a G --the Masonic emblem - a craftsman’s compass and a square forming a diamond with a G, for God or Great Geometer.

Solving KRYPTOS - Part 2: Kryptos Morse Code is E-Z as A-B-C

It is not a "hidden" secret that keywords to solve the KRYPTOS enigma can be found in the "simple past" of the CIA.   K1, K2, K3 keywords = PS - It's as simple as A-B-C  F-E-D. 

But to find "X" we must solve the Kryptos Morse Code:  Follow the X Abscissa on the Compass Rose to the intersection of the Y coordinate (PY). 

 

The elusive K4 is reportedly undecipherable by data encryption detection. James Sanborn and Ed Scheidt have suggested if/when the data/words were discovered in K4, the meaning would be obscure and just the first step to solve the Kryptos enigma. K4’s plaintext itself is not standard English (e.g.  I C U, U C Me?) and may require a second level of cryptanalysis.   Where R U "X"?

Solving KRYPTOS: To Find "X" + "Q" Look Past the Big "W"

"I know where the Big "W" is. I'm the only one and I wasn't even looking."

That was Dorothy Provine telling Spencer Tracy in my favorite movie, "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World,"  she was the first one to recognize the "Big W," the secret location where Smiler Grogan (Jimmy Durante) hid the 350 Gs.

"I wasn't even looking." That pretty much explains how I found clues to solve the Kryptos mystery and the answer to the question posed at the end of K3 - "X Can you see anything Q?"   To find "X" and "Q" look past  the Big"W."  "PS: It's as simple as A-B-C + F-E-D."   (Hint: look between the letters to solve Kryptos.)

I didn't know there was a Kryptos mystery until I started getting "LOST."  "LOST" is a real mystery.  JJ Abrams, the creator of "LOST," has a mysterious fascination with Kryptos, having alluded to a "solution" in the "Alias" "S.O.S." episode and naming a "LOST" episode, "S.O.S."  (I could try to give you a background on "LOST," but after Jacob was killed by Ben in 2007, who was fooled by John Locke, who really wasn't John Locke, while the other major characters flashed back to 1977, and one of them thought it was a good idea to drop a nuke down a shaft so “they could all just go home again,” I took up watching Glenn Beck.  Talk about your Chock-Full-of Nuts.)

JJ  was the guest editor of WIRED magazine for its May 2009 Mystery edition.  JJ says everything is mystery but I'm thinking JJ knows some answers to the Kryptos mystery.  The  mystery edition featured cryptic articles about "LOST" and Kryptos, and like the "Big W," the Chase for Sanborn's creation, his enigmatic sculpture located at the CIA courtyard, was afoot.  The "Big W" was at "Eight o'clock."

To solve Kryptos one needs to know X-actly what we are looking for in Sanborn's code. Here's a clue:

"WW:  "Kryptos speaks to a sense of place. You have captured much of what this agency is about."

In an interview for WIRED in January 2005, Sanborn confirmed that  "Who knows the exact location?  Only WW," "WW" was intended to refer to William Webster.  But later Sanborn said he did not tell Webster about K4, which meant Webster did not know the location.

So how do we find the location in K4?  Here's some cryptic clues:

Ed Scheidt said 'Part 4 is designed to be solved in a straightforward manner with pencil and paper, and that he did things to "disguise the English" in part 4, so that it couldn't be solved in the frequency analysis ways that were used for parts 1-3. The idea of encoding a message is not only to encode the externals of a message (the English language), but the message itself.  Once it is readable, it may have other encoding that's involved in it."

The cryptic sculpture is divided into four messages; the first three have been solved. K1 and K2 used polyalphabetic substitution and K3 using transposition. Sanborn says there are intentional repeats and misspellings:  For example:

DESPARATLY -- correct spelling is "desperately."  Sanborn transposed an A for the E between letters P- R.   (Read: letter between "P" and "R" is "Q".  "Q" = "E")

UNDERGRUUND -- correct spelling is "underground." S-T between R+U.  "Double U-U in ground" (Read: W in ground)

IQLUSION -- correct spelling is "illusion."  Letter "Q" is between "I- L."   "J-K" are letters in center (Read:  "Q" is next to J Kennedy Center)

Combining these clues with the keywords may provide directions to find the "hidden" location.

"Q"  the "E" shaped building, was the original building of the OSS-CIA ("simple past") on 23rd + E Street - the Potomac Annex of the State Department. "E"  is next to the J. Kennedy Center.
 

Is the Kryptos sine wave a Big Double U ("Big W")?   Ed Scheidt indicated Kryptos was a "pictorial representation," perhaps a representation of the National Mall: the Reflection Pool,  the "Subtle Shading" of the "Lincoln profile" Red Slate (Lincoln Memorial), the FED Triangle Rock (A-B-C) bordered by 23rd Street, and the petrified wood (Museum of Natural History) behind the Big Double U (Washington Monument).
